Born in 1971, in the Metropolitan Area of South Carolina, Columbia, United States, Creighton Waters is an American Chief Attorney and television personality. He became renowned after cross-examining Alex Murdaugh, a former South Carolina attorney who was sentenced to life in prison for killing his wife and son, during his double murder trial. 


Creighton Waters was the lead prosecutor in the double murder trial of Alex Murdaugh and is currently a Chief Attorney in the State Grand Jury Section at the South Carolina Office of the Attorney General.



Education

Creighton Waters studied first at the Honors College of the University of South Carolina before moving to the law school of the same university to pursue a law degree, which he acquired in 1996. He has since gone on to create a reputable and successful legal career.


Career

Creighton Waters started his career after acquiring his law degree in 1996, working as a clerk for Jasper Cureton, a late South Carolina Court of Appeals Judge. While working as a clerk for Jasper Cureton, whom he also considered a mentor, Creighton Waters learned a lot about the law and its judicial process. He later stopped working as a clerk for Jasper Cureton in 1998 to join the Office of the South Carolina Attorney General.

 While in the Office of the South Carolina Attorney General, Creighton Waters worked at the appellate division with Don Zelenka, a Deputy Attorney General who is a legend in his own right. During his time at the appellate division, Creighton Waters defended a variety of death penalty convictions that had been won by other prosecutors, most notably one that went all the way to the Supreme Court of the United States.


In 2010, Creighton Waters left the appellate division of the South Carolina Attorney General and moved to the State Grand Jury, where he helped bring down some of the biggest criminals in the state.


Over the course of his career, Creighton Waters helped to successfully prosecute corrupt county officials, school district officials, and law enforcement officials. He also worked with prosecutors on top cases like the $90 million Virgil C. Summer nuclear expansion project crime conspiracy and the misconduct allegations against Bobby Harrell of Charleston, a former South Carolina Speaker of the House.


Recently, following the investigations that were carried out on the drug dealings in the state prison system, Creighton Waters helped obtain indictments on over 100 suspects involved in the operations. This also helped to reveal the use of cell phones and other contraband items within the prison system. 


During the double murder trial of Alex Murdaugh, former South Carolina Attorney Creighton Waters received lots of recognition for his cross-examination of the suspect, now convicted, during which he questioned some of the falsehoods in the details provided by him concerning his whereabouts on the night he killed his wife and son.
