Who is Karun? Karun is a Kenyan songwriter, singer, and music producer. She made her way into the music industry at a young age as a member of Camp Mulla, a music group which was once nominated for a BET Award. 

Karun, in the course of her music career, has also been part of Cosmic Homies, an experimental music collective, and Empawa Music programme.

Karun Biography

Early Life

Karungari Mungai, popularly known as Karun, was born on July 7, 1994, in Kenya. Growing up, she had a keen interest in music and by the time she was six years of age, she was already receiving support from members of her family to pursue music. 

At the age of 13, Karun entered the studio for the first time ever to assess her talent in music. While in the studio, she recorded the hook of a song and upon finding out that her voice on the hook was good, she decided to pursue music as a career. During that period, she was also drawing inspiration from popular female artistes like Amel Larriuex, India Arie, and Alicia Keys. 

Education

Although not much is know about Karun's educational background, it is at least known that she attended the Berkeley College of Music where she pursued a degree in Music.

Camp Mullah

Karun started her music career while she was a teenager as a member of Camp Mulla, an alternative hip-hop music group in Kenya. The group was made up of five members; Miss Karun (the lead singer), Mykie Tuchi (the hype man), K’Cous (the producer), and two rappers, Shappa Man and Taio Tripper. 

Initially, Camp Mulla was known as an underground group which only shared their music within highschool circles but with time it started expanding. In 2010, the group released its first single titled “Low,” which was followed by another single titled “Party Don't Stop.” “Party Don't Stop” became an instant hit and gave the group recognition in the Kenyan music industry. 

In 2012, Camp Mulla was nominated in the “Best International Act - Africa” category at the BET Awards, and in the following year, Karun left the group to pursue a career in music at Berkeley College of Music. 

Solo Career

After pursuing a degree in music, Karun returned to the music scene in 2013 but this time as a solo artiste and with the stage name “Lady Karun.”

As a solo music artiste, Karun released a 14-track album titled “Sun & Moon.” The album was a hit and represented both her wild side and her calm side. It was also an infusion of R&B sound and afrosoul sound. “Sun,” the album's interlude, was synched on a FOX TV show titled “The Resident.”

Following the release of her album, Karun released “Lady Bug Project,” a web series that showed how she prepared towards the launch of the album. The web series was posted on her YouTube channel. 

Cosmic Homies

In 2016, Karun joined Cosmic Homies, an experimental music collective that consisted of four members; Karun (known then as Runkah), Joseph Kiwango, Marushka, and TAIO (who went by the stage name Taio Tripper at Camp Mulla). 

Cosmic Homies was an underground music group which described its sound as electro-organic and aimed at challenging the traditional stereotypes in the Kenyan music industry. In 2016, it performed at SXSW in Austin, Texas, and released an album titled “O.N.E.”

Second Solo Career

In 2018, Karun went solo for a second time. She featured Blinky Bill on a song titled “Make Believe,” and later featured Ukweli on “Roses.” The following year, she joined Me Eazi's Empawa Africa programme. While under the programme, Karun released a single titled “Glow Up,” and later that year she was inducted into Africa Forbes 30 under 30.

In 2020, Karun collaborated with Sky Girls Kenya on a single titled “True To Me,” and in 2021, she released “Catch A Vibe,” a 7-track EP which explored the themes of gratitude and self-discovery. 

In 2022, Karun released “Pen and Paper,” a song in which she expressed her feelings for a lover. She also released “Passenger 555,” a 7-track collaborative album with producer Jinku. 

In 2023, Karun performed at the metaverse concert, won the Amplify You metaverse competition, and performed a song titled “Only You” at the Colours Show.
